Benefits of TIG Welding Over Other Forms of Welding

TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is an incredibly efficient and effective form of welding that has been mastered and perfected over the last few decades. It has been used in everything from shipbuilding to bicycle manufacturing. Because of this, it’s important to understand the benefits of TIG welding over other forms.

It Can Be Used to Create High Quality, Clean Welds

The special significance of TIG welding is that the shielding gas that it uses doesn’t conduct any heat, as it is an inert gas (hence the name of the type of welding). Because of this, it means that the metal weld doesn’t occupy other areas around the welding region.

This results in a very clean and precise weld that is of an extremely high quality. As well as this, the heat input is controlled by the welder themselves, meaning that they can increase or decrease the temperature of the weld puddle, allowing the welder to achieve weld bead control. One example of where this is particularly important is in cosmetic welds such as in sculptures and automotive welds.

It Can Be Used on Various Metals

Another great advantage that TIG welding has to offer is that it can be applied to nearly every type of metal, meaning that it is an incredibly versatile process. Some examples that it can be used for include steel, stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium, copper, and other exotic metals, as well as popular alloys such as nickel-based ones.

As well as being applicable to a variety of metals, this type of welding is also applicable to various thicknesses of metal. By controlling the amount of heat that goes into the welder, you can alter the amount of energy that is applied to the metal to ensure that there is no excess heat being lost and that the metal doesn’t result in deformation.

You Can Do Welding in Any Position

This is another great benefit that TIG welding has to offer. Some welding machines tend to be quick, large and cumbersome, which means that they can be quite difficult to move and you are constricted with what forms of welding you can do.

With TIG welding, the welding device is relatively small, versatile and incredibly mobile, meaning that you can do multiple forms of welding joints, such as butt joints (where two pieces of metal are joined adjacently), lap joints (where one piece of metal is joined to another piece below it), and fillet joints (two pieces of metal are joined perpendicularly).

TIG welding is an extremely popular manufacturing and engineering process that is also incredibly important. However, as well as this, TIG welding is very popular amongst people that take up welding as a hobby. Luckily, here at Adams Gas, we are able to provide TIG welding gas, whether you are interested in taking it up as a hobby or you are an experienced welder.
